FIDM: Shoe Wear Design Challenge

Thanks Lynne Bartley from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in California for joining us at Alter High School. She shared information about FIDM summer programs and college opportunities, history of the shoe industry as well as a fun, creative shoe design challenge. Members created a one of a kind shoe collection based on pop star, Katy Perry.

Althea Harper Presentation

Last month, Fashion Club was lucky enough to host Althea Harper, season 6 Project Runway runner-up and Dayton native. She told us about her experiences in the fashion world, and shared some of what she has learned from interning at Alexander McQueen and working at Tory Burch. We learned a lot from Althea-- fashion industry lingo, college options, and how she got her "dream" internships. Aside from these practical lessons, Althea urged us to follow our passions: "If you have a passion and you want to follow it, start now. While you're young, everyone is here to help you and everyone wants you to succeed." She went on, saying, "You don't have to conform to what's going on in society. Tory Burch wouldn't make a mini skirt. If you don't like what's popular, just don't do it." This advice hit home for us, especially in the high school world where everyone wants you to conform or be left out. Basically, Althea is the cool older sister we all wish we had.

Today, Althea resides in Oakwood with her adorable daughter. As a mom and fashion designer, she shows girls that you really can have it all. Thank you again, Althea, for coming in and sharing with us how you do things your way.
